AMI Presentation at AIAA
AMI recently completed design, test, and validation efforts for the Lockheed Martin CATBird external modifications. The Lockheed Martin Cooperative Avionics Testbed is a flying testbed to evaluate F-35 Joint Strike Fighter sensor operations and data fusion in an operational environment. The Boeing 737-300 airframe was modified with replacement of the nose radome, addition of sensor wings on the forward fuselage and strake
antennas on the aft fuselage, and the addition of extensive spine and canoe antenna fairings over the airplane's upper and lower fuselage.
AMI assumed aerodynamic design and validation responsibility for the OML changes. Experimental and theoretical tools were used for the design, analysis, and flight test clearance. The testbed was demonstrated by flight test to be able to perform its mission and to comply with the appropriate CFR14 Part 25 airworthiness criteria.
The design, analysis, and testing efforts are discussed in detail in the AIAA paper AIAA-2008-0157 presented at the 46th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting.
